Dutch Apple Pie
This is a recipe from my mom, I just added oatmeal to the topping after I read an article in Cook’s Country. They interviewed a lady in Philadelphia who owns Magpie bakery. They had a pretty good description of her dutch apple pie but no exact amounts of anything so I am going to try and figure out her recipe. She uses a whole can of sweetened condensed milk in her pie filling. She also has you chill the pie dough for a couple days and let the pie rest a whole day before eating! It sounds like quite a lengthy process.
In the meanwhile, I decided to give my mom’s old favorite recipe a try and I loved it! I love the press in crust, you can eat it as soon as it’s out of the oven and it tastes amazing!
Crust:
1 1/2 C flour
1 1/2 tsp sugar
1 tsp salt
1/2 C veg oil
2 T cold milk
Combine and pat in bottom of pie pan.
Filling:
4 C sliced apples (golden delicious)
1/2 C sugar
2 T flour
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp cinnamon
Combine dry ingredients and toss with apples
Topping:
1/2 C flour
1/2 C butter
1/2 C sugar
1/2 C oats
Combine and sprinkle over the top.
Place in a brown paper bag, fold ends and don’t peek! Bake 1 hr 30 min at 350 degrees. Pie will be plump and browned just right. Serve with Caramel pecan ice cream.
